3 Men’s Morris

History of 3 Men's Morris

The game is of unknown antiquity, but is assumed to have been known in the ancient world. Circular patterns etched into Roman stonework are often thought to be a variant of 3 Men's Morris. Similar diagrams are found in Egypt, Greece, Sri Lanka and China. In China, 21 books on the game were written around the end of the sixth century.

3 Men's Morris did not come to Britain until the Norman conquest in the eleventh century. After that time it is found across the country and a number of examples have been found carved into the stonework of cloister seats.

Its descendant, noughts and crosses (or tic-tac-toe) is much better known. Other derivatives of the game include 6 Men’s Morris, 9 Men’s Morris & 12 Men’s Morris.

3 Men’s Morris Playing Grid

3 Men’s Morris Playing Grid

Play:

Each player has three pieces. Players enter their pieces one at a time, in turn, trying to form a row of three. Once all pieces are on the board, players move their pieces along the marked lines until one player or other has a row of three, that player winning the game.

Rules:

  1. Three Men's Morris is played by two players, with pieces placed on the points of the lined board.
  2. The board starts empty, each player holding all their pieces in hand.
  3. At first, each player in turn puts one piece on the board, at any vacant point.
  4. Once all pieces are on the board, a player instead moves one of his pieces along a marked line to an adjacent empty point.
  5. If a piece placed or moved as in rules 3 or 4 forms a row of three along a marked line (called a mill), the game is won.

Master Cutlers

To be a Freeman of the Cutlers’ Company is to be part of an organisation that has been intimately involved with the manufacturing industries of Sheffield for 400 years.

The “Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire in the County of York” is normally shortened locally to the Cutlers Company and remains very close to its manufacturing roots, as it has been since 1624. All Master Cutlers are “in trade” and elected because of their involvement with local manufacturing across Sheffield & South Yorkshire.

Initially the arbiter of Cutlers’ Trademarks and Apprentices the Cutlers’ Company effectively moved the economic benefits of the cutlery industry from the Lords of the Land into the hands of the people working in the industry with the Act of Parliament in April 1624.

Cutlers Coat of Arms

Since then, the Cutlers of Sheffield have evolved through innovation, hard work and vision into steel and steel products before expanding into aerospace, digital engineering, tooling and many other sectors. This expansion into new sectors has always been with the “Made in Sheffield” quality ethos of the original Cutlers at their core and has happened alongside the traditional industries of “Hallamshire and 6 miles compass” (the S postcode in modern parlance). The Company of Cutlers has evolved to reflect these advances and changes in the region over 400 years to lead the representation and promotion of the manufacturing industries of the region locally, nationally and internationally. It also maintains close links with the Judiciary, Emergency Services, Livery and Local Government.

The Master Cutler acts as the “Voice of Manufacturing” for the Sheffield & South Yorkshire supported by the Members, Freemen and Friends of the Company who help to keep the importance of manufacturing at the forefront of all that we do.

The “Company” structure is set out in the Act of Parliament as being the Commonality of Freemen with a governing body consisting of a Master Cutler and 32 members charged with the control of trademarks, apprentices and searching out shoddy goods. These roles continue today with the Wardens, Searchers and Assistants, who are all drawn from the Freemen. Past Masters chair the key committees such as charity, education & skills and the Preservation Trust as well as holding key roles like the Friends advisor, Freeman’s advisors and the Sheffield Defence advisor.

The representation work of the Master is underpinned by the continuing role of the Company in education & skills, spearheaded by the Company’s “Better learners Better Workers” programme, and the charitable activities undertaken, including but not limited to the Master Cutlers Challenge. The Company is also in the events industry using the Cutlers Hall to welcome people to the region and to impress them with what has been achieved here and inspire them with what is happening in Sheffield & South Yorkshire now.

Finally, the Company is run on a day to day basis by the Clerk, who is the Company’s CEO. He in turn is supported by his team of Beadles, Administrators, Chefs, Archivists, Hospitality, House and Catering staff who make the Hall what it is today.

Lets tell the World its……..
