Squirrells and Beavers arrive at the Treewalk
Authored on

More than 200 Squirrels, Beavers and their leaders took part in a tree walk and activity day at AESSEAL’s Factory for the Future.

As well as discovering how industry and nature can grow together, the children – from groups across Rotherham – enjoyed events such as soft axe throwing and soft archery, as well as various sports.

They learned about global issues including water filtration and recycling, and participated in experiments, health and fitness sessions, and garden games.

The children were fully supervised by Scout, Squirrels and Beavers leaders from across the Rotherham District, as well as parents and volunteers from AESSEAL.

Rotherham Scouts support team leader Dan Maude said:

What an amazing day for Rotherham District Beavers and Squirrels at AESSEAL!

The young people had a fantastic time exploring the incredible tree walk area and taking part in lots of exciting activities, from science experiments to learning about global issues, health and fitness and so much more. By the end of the event, everyone had achieved three badges and worked towards some of their challenge badges.

With AESSEAL hosting this event, it has taken the Squirrels and Beavers one step closer to completing their Bronze and Acorn Awards which are the highest awards they can earn in each section. We would like to say a huge thank you to the team at AESSEAL for facilitating such a fantastic event. We are already looking forward to returning for another exciting day with our Cub sections!

The 1km tree walk was opened around the 175,000 sq ft Factory for the Future in Rotherham last year with the intention of providing activities around wildlife and the environment, and showing that industry and nature can grow together.

The trail was built as part of the company’s pledge to invest £29 million by 2029 on environmental and sustainability projects to help guarantee a future. Early visitors included a kingfisher, a fox and her cubs, and a great tit, who hatched six chicks in a bird box and then returned to hatch five more.

More than 600 schoolchildren and young people’s groups have so far enjoyed the birds, insects and wildlife they have seen on the site.

Earlier this week more than 50 children from Meynell School in Sheffield also visited AESSEAL and took part in tree walks and tours of the factory.

AESSEAL believes the trail provides a wonderful opportunity for any employees who are involved in children’s groups, or whose boys and girls are members, to take part. To arrange a booking or find out more information, please contact TreeWalk@aesseal.co.uk.
